DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union significantly escalated its walkout against Detroit's Three automakers, shutting down Ford's largest factory and threatening Jeep maker Stellantis. “Here's to hoping talks at Stellantis today are more productive than Ford yesterday,” Fain wrote on X, formerly Twitter, without saying what might happen. Ford's truck plant makes heavy-duty F-Series pickup trucks and large Ford and Lincoln SUVs, hitting the company's most lucrative products. The company, however, called the strike expansion “grossly irresponsible” and said it has made strong wage and benefit offers to the union. The Kentucky strike brings to 33,700 the number of workers on strike against the three automakers.

They note that the job cuts have occurred mainly at factories that make parts for assembly plants that were closed by strikes. In one case, layoffs have been imposed at a factory that uses supplies from a parts factory on strike. The factories that have been affected by layoffs are in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and New York. UAW President Shawn Fain countered in a statement that the automakers were using layoffs to pressure the union into settling the strike. Once metal stamping factories that supply multiple assembly plants have produced enough parts for non-striking facilities, the companies would likely shut them down.

GM, Ford, and some suppliers are resorting to layoffs. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe ripple effects of the UAW's unprecedented strike at Ford, GM, and Stellantis are getting wider as the work stoppages stretch through a third week. The UAW responded on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that the CEO had not attended bargaining that week. The impact of lost production is also affecting suppliers now, with the vehicle-suppliers association MEMA reporting about a third of suppliers have issued layoffs due to the UAW strike. Fain is scheduled to address UAW members in a livestream Friday afternoon, a platform he's previously used to expand the strike when he's unhappy with the pace of negotiations.

Those smaller suppliers have only recently recovered from the shocks of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting global shortage of semiconductors. Now, they're coming under pressure to increase their own workers' wages — in an environment where higher interest rates have made it more costly to borrow money — and staring down the threat of ongoing auto workers' strikes. WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - U.S. auto suppliers on Tuesday urged President Joe Biden to provide federal assistance to help auto parts companies impacted by the ongoing United Auto Workers strike against the Detroit Three automakers. MEMA, the Vehicle Suppliers Association, in a letter seen by Reuters urged Biden to "effectuate federal assistance to ensure the viability of this critical industry sector. Without federal assistance, the ability of the automotive industry to resume full manufacturing capacity is at risk." The group wants the Biden administration to provide low-interest loans and consider loan forgiveness for struggling small suppliers. The White House did not immediately comment and has previously declined to comment on whether it is considering programs to support auto suppliers.
